During the tour, Sheikh Mohammed took a comprehensive look at the ongoing cabin refurbishment program, observing the transformation of an A380 aircraft stripped of its interiors and witnessing a newly refurbished aircraft featuring Emirates’ latest Premium Economy product and cabin interiors. Delving further into the engineering process, His Highness and his entourage visited the state-of-the-art cabin workshops, where they observed a demonstration of aircraft safety slides and engaged with the skilled team of engineers and technicians working on the retrofit program. Notably, Emirates Engineering employs over 5,500 individuals, with 60% of the workforce consisting of UAE nationals and close to 20% comprising talented female professionals.
Sheikh Mohammed expressed his admiration for the Emirates Engineering Centre, a highly esteemed civil aviation maintenance facility renowned for its capabilities in servicing Emirates’ modern fleet of 260 aircraft. Spanning an impressive 400,000 square meters, the facility boasts 12 fully air-conditioned hangars, including the largest free-spanned structures in the Middle East, featuring hangars supported by single spans measuring 110 meters in length.
Emirates’ ambitious retrofit program, a $2 billion commitment, aims to ensure unparalleled quality in the sky. Over the course of two years, the program will revamp the cabin interiors of 120 Emirates aircraft. Each aircraft refurbishment, currently taking approximately 21 days and involving over 1,000 man-hours per day, represents the largest known cabin retrofit project in aviation, entirely executed within the UAE.
Since the program’s initiation in November 2022, the Emirates Engineering Centre has successfully refurbished 14 A380s, enabling the airline to introduce its Premium Economy product and offer enhanced cabin experiences on popular routes such as London Heathrow, New York JFK, San Francisco, Houston, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, and Singapore. As the rollout continues, the retrofitted and enhanced Emirates A380s, featuring a four-class configuration, will extend Premium Economy services to additional global destinations.
Furthermore, Sheikh Mohammed and his delegation visited Terminal 2 at Dubai International Airport, which serves as the operational base for Flydubai and provides services to 18 other airlines. During the visit, His Highness was briefed on the airport’s operations, including measures to expedite passenger procedures and preparations to accommodate the anticipated increase in travel during the summer holiday season. Appreciating the airport’s remarkable progress under the leadership of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Sheikh Mohammed acknowledged its growth as a major global aviation hub and its consistent ranking as the world’s busiest airport.
With over 66 million passengers received in 2022 and more than 21 million passengers in the first quarter of 2023, representing a significant growth of 55.8% compared to Q1 2022, Dubai International Airport continues to ensure the provision of safe and comfortable travel experiences for passengers worldwide.
